Glenn Arvin:
Glenn Arvin is a senior Journeyman Upgrade Instructor for
San Mateo County Electrical JATC. His career in the electrical industry began
as an apprentice in Local #617 on October 1, 1984, with the oldest electrical
contractor in San Mateo County, Atlas Electric. In 1988, Glenn “turned out” as
a Journeyman Electrician, working for the now merged company of Atlas Pellizzari,
in Redwood City.
Glenn’s career has encompassed being an Apprentice,
Journeyman Wireman, Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, Estimator, Project
Manager, and Upgrade Instructor. Glenn also holds a Bachelor of Science degree
in Electrical Engineering. With this formidable background Glenn is now giving
back “to the industry that has been so good to me.” Glenn has been an upgrade
instructor since 1993. Glenn currently instructs in Foremanship, Solar
Installation, and Preparation for the State of California Electrical
Certification.
Ron Ricci:
Education of future Journeyman Wireman has been the main
focal point of Ron Ricci’s for the past 30 years. Ron is a graduate of the
class of 1969, Local Union #617. Six years after his graduation, Ron was
instructing for the San Mateo County JATC. His motivation for teaching is his
love for the electrical industry and “giving back” to the industry. Until the
recent sale of Schwartz and Lindheim to Morrow Meadows, Ron was Vice-President
for Schwartz and Lindheim. He currently holds a position as Project Manager
with Morrow Meadows in San Bruno.
Ron instructs the Fifth year apprentices. With his
extensive background Ron brings to the apprentices the perspective of the
Contractor as well as the Journeyman Wireman. Every year the apprentices are
exposed to the fundamentals of Foremanship, Code, and Estimating. As one fifth
year apprentice stated, “Ron brings the past four years into the class and makes
it ALL make sense.”
Kathleen A. Barber:
Guiding the future development of the San Mateo County
Electrical Industry rests within the domain of the Training Director.
Since taking the position of Training Director in December 2002, Kathleen has
automated the database of the apprentice records, developed a website for
registration of classes and information regarding the apprenticeship,
implemented year-end hands on skill assessment for each apprentice year,
developed a monthly schedule for apprentice/instructor hands on training,
increased the apprentice numbers by 25%, initiated placement testing and
placement of non-union electricians within the apprenticeship in accordance with
the Standards filed with the State of California, and established Journeyman upgrade
classes in preparation of the State of California’s Electrical Certification.
Kathleen is a Local Union #617 Journey Wireman, holds an
Associates degree in Electrical Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in
Human Resource/Counseling and is a Certified Master Instructor of Education for
the NJATC.
Dave Huston:
Traditionally the training of apprentices has been done by
the Journeyman on the job. For years Dave has been teaching Journeyman and
apprentices alike what being an electrician means in today’s business market.
The San Mateo County Electrical JATC is indeed fortunate to have Dave Huston as
a third year instructor; Dave’s entire family is made up of electricians.
Dave’s son is a Local Union #617 apprentice, his father in law is a
retired Local Union #617 electrician and Dave is General Foreman for Liberty
Electric. In Dave's words, "There is nothing more rewarding
then knowing I have given these guys the skills necessary to do a good job and
be productive.”
John Robins:
For more than a decade John Robins has been guiding
second year apprentices through the web of electrical theory, transformer
theory, and codeology, with his quiet, impeccable approach. One of the most
fundamental aspects of electricity is the relationship between what is
theoretical and practical application. John has developed a multitude of
methods to demonstrate the everyday use of combination RLC circuits, transformer
windings that result different voltages, and the value of understanding the
National Electrical Code. John holds a Bachelor Degree from San Francisco State
and was the first San Mateo County Electrical JATC instructor to become a
Certified Master Instructor of Education for the NJATC.
Jim Stewart:
As a fourth year instructor Jim has the responsibility of
instructing the students in the fundamentals of motors, motor control and
programmable logic controllers (PLC). Whether it is quantum physics or wiring a
motor, Jim brings to the apprentice a keen appreciation for the learning
process. Jim’s experience and expertise was honed as an upgrade instructor
under the old COMET program. Jim is currently working on his Certification for
Master Instructor for the NJATC.
Douglas Goldman:
New to the San Mateo County Electrical JATC instructor
staff is Doug Goldman. Doug is a Local Union #617 Journey Wireman for
Atlas Pellizari. Doug will be instructing the
second year apprentices. Prior to his appointment as a second year instructor,
Doug volunteered as the shop instructor assisting the Apprentice instructors in
hands-on labs. Doug brings to the JATC an extensive knowledge in the field of
electronics.
D. J. Siegman:
One of our newest instructors, D.J. Siegman brings a well rounded field experience to the SMJATC. D.J. started her electrical apprenticeship in 1993 in local union #617. Soon after her initiation into the local union she started to attend the monthly union meetings. She has always considered the meetings an important way to be connected to the Local. But she clearly sees the meetings as only ONE way to be connected.
In 2003, D.J. became involved with the SMJATC as a tutor/lab assistant. This brought her back to the apprenticeship from a different perspective. For D.J. it offered an opportunity for her to help others through a program that taught her so much.
In 2004, D. J. was elected to the Executive Board for Local #617. When asked how it feels to be on the board, D.J. responds with her usual grace, “It is truly an honor to serve the Local in this capacity. I continue to have faith that through involvement all problems can be resolved.”
D.J. holds a Bachelor Degree in Psychology /Social Work.
